Police Officer Killed In Road Accident During Stop-and-Search Duty

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of one of its officers, Inspector Habila Mangai, who died following a fatal road traffic accident in Imo State, and has pledged a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Force said it “mourns the tragic death of Inspector Habila Mangai, who lost his life in a fatal road traffic accident while on lawful stop-and-search duty along the Owerri–Okigwe Road in Imo State on 18th April, 2026.”

The statement, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, noted the risks faced daily by officers in the line of duty.

The late inspector, attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was reportedly carrying out official duties at Amaraku when the incident occurred. According to the statement, he “he was knocked down by a Mack truck driven by one Chisom Ajah.”

Police authorities disclosed that the officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri for urgent medical attention.

However, despite efforts to save him, he “was confirmed dead by the attending medical personnel.”

His remains, the statement added, “have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.”

Following the incident, law enforcement authorities took swift action.

The truck driver, identified as Chisom Ajah, has been taken into custody along with the vehicle involved in the incident.

The police confirmed that both have been “handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department (SMTD), Owerri, for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

He “commiserates with the family, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command over the painful loss,” while also assuring that “the sacrifice of the deceased will not be in vain.”

The Force reiterated its commitment to accountability and justice, emphasising that “a thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and that justice will be duly served in accordance with the law.”

Beyond the immediate response, the police also used the opportunity to address road safety concerns, urging motorists nationwide to be more vigilant.

It called on drivers to “exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and maintain due care, particularly around police operational checkpoints and duty posts.”
