Police Invite Kano Politician Over Alleged Firearm Display In Viral Video

The Kano State Police Command has invited a politician, Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, for questioning over an alleged unlawful display of a firearm during what appeared to be a political gathering.

The command said it came across a video circulating on social media during its routine cyber patrol, in which Warkal was allegedly seen openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle.

In a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesman, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police said the alleged display, if established, could constitute a violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act.

The command said such conduct could also “incite fear, intimidate members of the public and breach public peace and security.”

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, directed that Warkal be invited to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano, for questioning.

“On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, SFIPMA, MNIM, MNIPS, MASIS, the said Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano,” the statement said.

It added that Warkal was currently at the command’s State Intelligence Department (SID), where investigation into the matter was ongoing.

The police did not disclose whether the firearm allegedly displayed in the video had been recovered or Warkal had provided an explanation for possessing or displaying it.

The command warned that it would not tolerate acts of lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the status of those involved.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly warns that the Command will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of the person involved,” the statement said.

The police also urged political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.

It advised political gladiators to ensure that their activities promote peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.

The command said it remained committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that Kano remained peaceful before, during and after the political season.
