The Delta State Police Command has demoted an inspector and a corporal after they were found guilty of extortion and other misconduct over a viral video showing them receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial of Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim of C Division, Asaba.
The officers, who were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station, were found guilty of “Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct,” contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
Following the disciplinary proceedings, Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.
Reiterating the Force’s position on extortion, Oyeniyi stressed that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu “unequivocally prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within Police stations and formations.”

He urged officers and men of the Command to uphold “the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens,” noting that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.
Oyeniyi said the disciplinary action “should serve as a deterrent” and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to “discipline, accountability and public trust.”
He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the appropriate channels, assuring that complaints against erring officers would be investigated and treated in accordance with the law.

Those officers at the counter, DCB and other section should learn from this as well, they always extort both complainers and suspect, especially if complainer come to report at counter, most of duty officer will not want to follow him/her to invite the accused person until the complainant drop money, dis should be corrected at all division
