Tension has gripped Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, following reports that suspected hoodlums attacked the council secretariat, leaving some travellers dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred amid an alleged attempt by suspected political thugs to take control of the council secretariat.
Ikire, the hometown of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, was thrown into confusion as the suspected hoodlums reportedly mobilised to oust the council executives.
The Nation reports that the APC had earlier raised concerns over a possible takeover of the secretariat from the “reinstated” council executives, while the Osun State Government had also warned against renewed political tension following the 2026 governorship election.
Sources told our correspondent that suspected thugs mobilised to the council secretariat in an attempt to take control of the facility.
The development reportedly triggered a violent confrontation during which travellers, drivers and passers-by were allegedly shot.
Several residents were said to have fled their homes and businesses for safety as gunshots rented the air.
The number of casualties could not be independently verified as of press time.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the deployment of security personnel to the area.
“Our men have been deployed to the scene, led by our Deputy Commissioner of Operations. That is all I can say for now,” he said.
