Osun Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Senator Francis Fadahunsi over a viral video in which the lawmaker allegedly called for the killing of Accord Party members and their family members.
Adeleke made the call on Tuesday during an emergency press briefing in Osogbo, where he also raised concerns over alleged security operations targeting leaders and members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The governor alleged that a police signal had been issued directing the arrest of Accord Party leaders across the state, with instructions that those arrested should be taken to Abuja and held there until after the election.
Adeleke said he had spoken with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the alleged directive and urged the police authorities to investigate the matter.
“I have spoken to the Inspector-General of Police about the reported directive to arrest Accord Party leaders. But I am appealing to him that this development, if true, is illegal and presents Nigeria as a lawless country,” he said.
The governor alleged that the arrest of opposition leaders shortly before an election could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
“Arresting Accord Party leaders on the eve of an election amounts to the police helping and assisting the APC to rig the election,” Adeleke alleged.
He further claimed that more than 62 Accord Party leaders were being held by the police without charges, describing the alleged detention as inconsistent with democratic principles.
Adeleke also demanded an immediate investigation into the viral video allegedly involving Senator Fadahunsi, saying its contents, if authentic, should be treated as a matter beyond partisan politics.
“The second issue has to do with the viral video of a serving Senator, Francis Fadahunsi, who today called for the killing of Accord Party leaders, supporters and their families,” Adeleke said.
He alleged that Fadahunsi went further in the video to threaten the wives and children of Accord Party leaders in cases where the party’s leaders could not be found.
The governor said he had brought the alleged statement to the attention of the Inspector-General of Police and demanded the senator’s immediate investigation and arrest.
According to Adeleke, the police chief had confirmed awareness of the video and assured him that appropriate action would be taken.
“This is now beyond politics. This is now a national security threat that requires the attention of Mr President through the Office of the National Security Adviser,” he said.
Adeleke consequently called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to investigate the matter and, where the allegations are established, prosecute Fadahunsi over what he described as an alleged incitement to violence against the people of Ijesaland and Osun State.
The governor also demanded an end to what he described as “illegal operations” by the Intelligence Response Team, alleging that its operatives had been arresting Accord Party leaders across various local government areas without justification.
He urged the police and other security agencies to ensure that all arrests and security operations were conducted in accordance with the law, particularly before, during and after the election.
“We demand that the IGP enforce due process and fair policing by aborting all anti-people plots against democracy in Osun,” Adeleke said.
“We finally request that the police and other security agencies should act in line with the rule of law and their oath of office before, during and after these coming elections.”
