RISING INSECURITY IN NIGERIA: CONDEMNATION OF THE KILLING OF MR. MICHEAL OYEDOKUN AND A CALL FOR INTENSIFIED ACTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, through the Office of the Secretary General, expresses grave concern over the worsening state of insecurity across Nigeria, particularly in Oyo State and the Southwest region.
Our people are living in fear. Innocent citizens are being killed daily, communities are constantly under threat, and cases of kidnapping and abduction continue to rise at an alarming rate. This unfortunate situation has created tension, panic, and uncertainty among students, parents, and the general public.
We strongly condemn the gruesome killing of Mr. Micheal Oyedokun, whose tragic death has once again exposed the deteriorating security situation within our society. The loss of innocent lives to criminal activities has become unbearable and unacceptable in a democratic society where the protection of lives and properties remains the primary responsibility of government.
Equally disturbing is the recent abduction of school students in Ogbomoso, an incident that has further heightened fear among residents and raised serious concerns about the safety of students and educational institutions within the state. Schools should remain centers of learning and development, not environments overshadowed by fear and insecurity.
The continuous occurrence of these unfortunate incidents clearly indicates the urgent need for stronger, more proactive, and intelligence-driven security measures across the country.
We therefore call on the Federal Government, the states government, security agencies, and all relevant authorities to intensify efforts towards tackling insecurity and restoring confidence among the people.
We specifically demand:
โข Immediate and thorough investigation into the killing of Mr. Micheal Oyedokun, with the perpetrators brought to justice without delay.
โข Swift rescue efforts and improved protection for students and educational institutions across Oyo State and the Southwest.
โข Increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable communities and highways.
โข Strengthened intelligence gathering and community policing strategies.
โข Better collaboration among federal and state security agencies in combating criminal activities.
โข Adequate welfare and operational support for security operatives to enhance effectiveness.
The government must understand that no society can progress in an atmosphere of fear and bloodshed. The safety of citizens must never be treated with negligence or political indifference.
As the umbrella body representing Nigerian students in Oyo State, National Association of Nigerian Students remains committed to advocating for peace, justice, security, and the protection of lives and properties across the state and the nation at large.
We urge students and members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while supporting lawful efforts aimed at restoring peace and security.
The time for decisive action is now. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, safety, and dignity.
Signed:
Ibrahim Oladipupo Ajuwon
Secretary General, NANS JCC Oyo State
