A 400-level medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Adewole Emmanuel, has died after collapsing moments before sitting for his final session examination.
The tragic incident, which has thrown the university community into mourning, was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday, April 22, 2026, by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA).
Announcing the development, the association described the deceased as a promising student whose sudden death has left colleagues devastated.
āUnder the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts to inform you of the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a solid pillar of his class,ā the statement read.
IFUMSA further portrayed Emmanuel as āa colleague, friend, roommate, and a Part 4 medical student with an undeniably bright future until the time of his passing.ā
āThis incident is not only sad, but crucially painful as we lost a rising star and a loving member of the IFUMSA family,ā the statement added.
The association appealed to the public to refrain from speculations surrounding the cause of death, urging respect for the bereaved family.
āIn honoring his dearest memories, we kindly ask the general public to do without speculations and respect the privacy of the family during this vulnerable period,ā it said.
A senior member of the association, who spoke with TheCable Newspaper on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation, disclosed that the student had shown no prior signs of illness before the incident.
āHe died yesterday. He hadnāt been sick. He just collapsed and couldnāt be resuscitated,ā the source said.
āWe were about to āwriteā (take) our final exam for the session. While waiting at the college, he suddenly collapsed and died. Itās just unfortunate, especially as he had no known underlying medical condition. We have contacted his family already.ā
