Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming she filed for divorce from her husband, saying the story is false.
In a statement posted on her verified X handle on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said she was compelled to respond after seeing what she described as false online reports alleging that she had begun divorce proceedings against Kanu.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she wrote.
She faulted the spread of what she called fabricated stories about her family without proper checks, warning that such reports erode the principles of responsible journalism.
Okwu-Kanu urged members of the public to seek information only from her or her authorised representatives.
She also appreciated those who contacted her to verify the claim before circulating it.
Kanu and Okwu-Kanu got married in 2009. He is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him on terrorism-related charges in November 2025.
The court found him guilty on all seven counts. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count and five years on another, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.
Kanu has since challenged the judgment. On February 4, 2026, he filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the conviction.
