Nigerians Demand Justice For Two Killed In South Africa

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa has demanded justice after the killing of two members, Taiwo Raji and Yemi Akinwunmi, who were shot dead by a South African citizen in Pretoria.

Raji and Akinwunmi were gunned down in front of their shops on Church Street, Arcadia, Pretoria, on 20th April, 2025.

This was disclosed in a statement by the NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, made available to our correspondent on Wednesday.

Onyekwelu said the Nigerian community had sought legal redress, but justice had not been served as the suspected killer was released on bail by a South African court.

The community leader said, “The suspected killer has long received bail from police custody and may not be found again. The deceased persons left behind two South African wives and six children, among other relatives and family members.”

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, Raji’s cousin, Babatunde Dosumu, said the accused was also a trader who was on a revenge mission over his missing phone in the market.

“The police said the man who killed my cousin was Kosina Titanbo. He said his phone was stolen in the market, and out of racial discrimination against Nigerians, he pulled out his gun and shot them,” Dosumu said.

In another incident, the NICASA president said a Nigerian businessman, Silas Ani, was kidnapped at his residence in Springs, Johannesburg.

Ani and other victims were allegedly abducted by a man identified as Xolani Khumalo on April 24, 2025.

“Many of them were beaten, abused, and flogged while lying on the bare floor,” Onyekwelu said.

“Some were taken to certain secluded areas for torture, including Mr Silas Ani. After a while, some were released with brutal wounds on their bodies, but Mr Silas has not returned.”

The community president said a Nigerian law firm, Tony Okorie Attorneys, had been consulted to handle the matter at the Johannesburg High Court.

He said the case was first postponed for review by a senior judge before a final judgement would be given, as Ani’s whereabouts had remained unknown.

Onyekwelu called for the intervention of the Federal Government on the matter, adding that the Nigerian mission and consulate had been informed about the incidents.
