Nigeria Deploys 10 Warships, 2 Helicopters In Gulf Of Guinea To Tackle Piracy, Oil Theft, Others

The Nigerian Navy has launched a major maritime security crackdown across the Gulf of Guinea, deploying 10 warships, two helicopters and other critical assets to combat piracy, sea robbery, illegal arms and drug trafficking, as well as crude oil theft.

The operation, codenamed Exercise Obangame Express 2026, was officially flagged off on Sunday aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship KADA in Onne, Rivers State, by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

Represented by the Chief of Naval Operations, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral P. E. Effah, Abbas said the large-scale multinational exercise is aimed at strengthening coordinated maritime security efforts across the increasingly volatile Gulf of Guinea region.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy’s deployment will also include maritime domain awareness assets and elite Special Boat Service personnel to execute complex operations targeting transnational maritime crimes.

Abbas stated that the assets will be deployed for operations against illegal arms and drug trafficking, crude oil theft, and unregulated fishing. They will also be used for visit, board, search and seizure procedures, as well as search‑and‑rescue missions and simulated hot pursuit exercises.

He added that the exercise, first initiated in 2010 by the United States Navy in collaboration with regional navies, has evolved into a critical platform for strengthening maritime security cooperation among Gulf of Guinea nations.

“It remains a critical instrument for fostering unity of effort, enhancing interoperability, and consolidating our shared resolve to secure our maritime domain against emerging and evolving threats,” Abbas said.

He stressed that the objectives of the exercise include boosting intelligence sharing, improving maritime domain awareness, and enhancing operational readiness among participating navies to tackle crimes such as piracy, sea robbery, and illicit trafficking.

“The core objectives of the exercise are clear and enduring. It includes strengthening regional maritime security cooperation, enhancing information sharing and maritime domain awareness, and improving tactical and operational readiness, he said.

Abbas also underscored the strategic design of the drills, describing them as essential to testing the Navy’s preparedness against real-world threats.

“These activities are deliberately structured to sharpen our operational competence, test our readiness and refine our collective response mechanisms to real-world maritime threats. The success of an exercise of this magnitude is underpinned by meticulous planning, robust logistics and unwavering commitment,” he said.

He commended Bola Tinubu for his continued support to the Armed Forces, while also praising senior naval commanders and personnel for their dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment.

“Through sustained collaboration, we will not only consolidate the gains already achieved but also build a more secure, stable and prosperous maritime domain for our nations,” Abbas added.

In his remarks, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral C. D. Okehie, described Obangame Express 2026 as a crucial multinational exercise conducted across West and Central Africa under the sponsorship of the United States Africa Command.

Okehie warned that Nigeria’s maritime domain, rich in economic resources critical to national development, remains highly vulnerable to criminal exploitation.

“This year’s exercise is particularly significant given the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea and more specifically, Nigeria’s maritime domain, which is endowed with vast economic resources that are vital to national development,” he said.

He further highlighted the global importance of the Gulf of Guinea as a major shipping route, stressing the urgent need for sustained security collaboration.

Okehie explained that the Gulf of Guinea serves as a major global sea lane of commerce and communication, making it indispensable not only to regional economies but also to international trade, and thus vulnerable to evolving maritime threats.

“It is therefore imperative that Nigeria continues to build, strengthen and sustain robust maritime security capabilities, while deepening cooperation with neighbouring countries and international partners.”

The launch of Exercise Obangame Express 2026 comes amid persistent concerns over piracy, oil theft, and illegal fishing activities that have continued to threaten economic stability and security in the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
