Nigeria and China have moved to deepen collaboration on maritime economic development and sustainability, with both countries expected to explore new areas of cooperation at a high-level international workshop in Beijing next week.
The development follows the invitation extended to Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Folorunsho Jimoh, to participate in the China Practice Training Series of United Nations Sustainable Development: Workshop on High-Quality Development of Maritime Economy, scheduled to hold in China from August 4 to 10, 2026.
The invitation was conveyed through an official diplomatic note issued by the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations and addressed to the Permanent Mission of Nigeria in New York.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh is expected to deliver a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the workshop, which will bring together diplomats, policymakers, maritime experts and development stakeholders from different parts of the world.
China said the Nigerian envoy’s participation reflects the growing diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation between both countries, particularly in areas of sustainable development and economic partnership.
The Chinese Mission noted that Ambassador Jimoh’s extensive diplomatic experience informed its decision to invite him to address participants at the international gathering.
His presentation is expected to focus on international cooperation in advancing the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 on Life Below Water, while highlighting collaborative approaches to achieving sustainable maritime economic development.
The workshop is expected to provide a platform for participating countries to exchange ideas and share best practices on promoting high-quality maritime economic growth, strengthening maritime governance and expanding international partnerships in the blue economy.
The engagement comes amid growing efforts by Nigeria and China to broaden bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including infrastructure, trade, technology, energy and maritime development.
For Nigeria, the workshop presents an opportunity to showcase its maritime potential and ongoing efforts to harness the blue economy as a driver of economic diversification, job creation and sustainable growth.
The event also aligns with the Federal Governments push to leverage economic diplomacy and strategic international partnerships to attract investment, deepen trade relations and advance national development objectives.
Observers say the participation of the Nigerian delegation in the Beijing workshop is expected to further strengthen cooperation between both countries while opening new avenues for collaboration in maritime development, investment and sustainable economic growth.
The workshop is also expected to contribute to broader international efforts aimed at promoting sustainable use of ocean resources and advancing global commitments under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
