Report of NAUS Oyo State Campus Monitoring Committee Visit to Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho

In the early hours of today, a delegation from the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Oyo State Campus Monitoring Committee, paid a visit to the newly established Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho, for a familiarization meeting with the institution’s management.

The purpose of the visit was to engage the school authorities on emerging issues affecting students who recently resumed academic activities in the institution.

The delegation was ably led by Comrade Salam Waris Abioye, the Chairman of Universities in Oyo State. Upon arrival, the team was warmly received by the Vice Chancellor, who welcomed the student leaders and appreciated their presence.

In his remarks, the Chairman introduced members of his delegation and highlighted the vision, mission, and objectives of NAUS. The Vice Chancellor, in response, acknowledged his prior familiarity with the association, drawing from his experience as a former Head of Department and Dean at the prestigious University of Ibadan.

The Chairman congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his well-deserved appointment and commended his dedication, which has led to the swift take-off of the university within a few months of its establishment. He described the early resumption of academic activities as a clear testament to the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to educational development.

Emphasizing student welfare and safety, the Chairman stressed the need for adequate preparation to accommodate student representation both within and outside the campus. He also drew attention to pressing concerns such as the high cost of accommodation within the host community and urged the management to appeal to landlords to be more considerate and accommodating.

Additionally, the issue of high transportation costs was raised. In response, the Vice Chancellor assured the delegation that steps had already been taken to address the situation and promised accelerated action following the Chairman’s intervention.

The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that the institution has already provided some student accommodation and is working towards expanding it. He also revealed plans to procure tricycles to ease transportation challenges for students on and off campus.

The Chairman commended the management for their prompt intervention and urged them to ensure the student’s safety while also facilitating the recovery of stolen items for their rightful owners.

Another issue raised involved cases of misconduct among some students, including immoral behavior and violent disputes that escalated to police involvement. The Vice Chancellor explained that a disciplinary committee had recommended the expulsion of the affected students. However, the Chairman passionately appealed for leniency, urging the management to reconsider the decision. Following his intervention, the management agreed to review the committee’s recommendation and consider alternative disciplinary measures.

At the end of the meeting, the Chairman conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the campus facilities and expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for establishing the institution in Okeho, Oyo State, noting its potential contribution to educational growth and community development.
