Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to take fresh legal action against the Senate leadership after security operatives stopped her from entering the National Assembly complex on Tuesday, despite a valid court order reinstating her.
The Kogi Central senator, who was suspended for six months earlier this year, said she will meet with her legal team to approach the appellate court for clarification and enforcement of the judgment that nullified her suspension.
Speaking to journalists after walking into the complex on foot, Natasha accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of contempt of court.
“Akpabio cannot be greater than the Nigerian Constitution. The Office of the Senate President doesn’t give me legitimacy as a senator. My legitimacy came from the people of Kogi who voted for me and INEC who declared me winner,” she declared.
She stressed that an appeal by the Senate does not nullify the judgment delivered by Justice Binta Nyako:
“That I’ve been denied entrance is a statement being made. It’s on record that the National Assembly under Akpabio has decided to be in contempt of a court decision. And it’s ironic—they are lawmakers. That poses a question: how far is our democracy?”
Natasha also slammed her earlier suspension as fraudulent before revealing her next step:
“Going forward, I will have a meeting with my legal team so they proceed to the appellate court to seek interpretation into what just happened. I’m a law-abiding citizen.”
