NANS Ogun, SUG Presidents Condemn Police Harassment Of Students Leaders, Declare June 1 Mass Protest

NANS OGUN JCC AND SUG PRESIDENTS DECLARE JUNE 1 MASS PROTEST, CONDEMN POLICE INVOLVEMENT IN STUDENT UNION AFFAIRS AND DEMAND END TO HARASSMENT OF STUDENT LEADERS

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Joint Campus Committee (JCC), alongside Presidents of Students’ Union Governments across Ogun State, expresses deep concern over the continuous use of security agencies by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez Amoo, to harass, intimidate, and victimize students and student leaders within Ogun State.

We acknowledge and commend the Ogun State Government for its sustained efforts towards ensuring peace, stability, and constructive engagement within the student community. The visible improvements in government-student relations have contributed significantly to a more conducive environment for learning and student development. It is therefore unfortunate that actions capable of creating tension and division within the student constituency are being sponsored against students and comrades who have continued to exercise their constitutional rights to association, expression, and participation in student affairs.

At a time when the nation is confronted with serious security challenges, including the unfortunate abduction of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who remain in captivity more than two weeks after their kidnapping, it is disappointing that security resources are being diverted towards matters relating to student union affairs. Rather than focusing on proactive collaboration with critical stakeholders to strengthen security around educational institutions, the Ogun State Police Command is allowing itself to be drawn into issues that should ordinarily be resolved through dialogue and established democratic processes within the student movement.

We are using this medium to draw the attention of the Ogun State Government, the leadership of NANS Southwest, and the National Leadership of NANS to the invitation of nine student stakeholders to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, on Monday, June 1, following a petition submitted by the Special Assistant on Student Affairs. It is noteworthy that some of the affected comrades are already involved in ongoing court proceedings initiated by the same government official. This latest action further strengthens concerns about a coordinated pattern of intimidation, harassment, and victimization targeted at student leaders and stakeholders across the state.

We wish to state unequivocally that there is credible evidence of repeated attempts to use security agencies against students and student leaders who hold differing views. Such actions are inconsistent with democratic principles and undermine the spirit of engagement and inclusiveness that the Ogun State Government has worked hard to promote. Student leaders should not be treated as criminals simply for expressing opinions, participating in student politics, or advocating for the interests of their constituents.

We therefore issue a strong warning to the Ogun State Police Command to desist from meddling in student union affairs and from allowing itself to be used as a tool for the persecution of students. The Command must remain professional, impartial, and focused on its constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property. Any attempt to oppress, intimidate, victimize, or harass students and stakeholders in Ogun State will be firmly resisted through lawful and democratic means.

The Ogun State Police Command should also be held accountable for any avoidable crisis that may arise from the continuous targeting of student leaders and stakeholders. The student community in Ogun State has remained peaceful, responsible, and committed to constructive engagement, and every effort must be made to preserve that peace rather than undermine it.

Furthermore, NANS Ogun JCC and the Forum of Students’ Union Government Presidents hereby notify the general public, relevant security agencies, the Ogun State Government, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders that a peaceful and well-coordinated mass protest shall take place on Monday, 1st June, 2026, at the Ogun State Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, by 7:30 a.m.

The protest is aimed at drawing urgent attention to two critical issues: the continued captivity of kidnapped students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and the growing trend of harassment, victimization, intimidation, and oppression of students and student stakeholders in Ogun State. The protest will also serve as a platform to demand stronger security measures for educational institutions and an immediate end to actions that undermine students’ rights and democratic participation.

We emphasize that the protest shall be peaceful, orderly, and conducted strictly within the ambit of the law. Participants are expected to comport themselves responsibly while expressing their grievances in a lawful and constructive manner.

NANS Ogun JCC and the Forum of Students’ Union Government Presidents remain committed to protecting the rights, welfare, and democratic freedoms of students across Ogun State and will continue to engage all relevant authorities in the interest of justice, fairness, and lasting peace.

Signed:

Comrade Olabode FaruQ Boluwatife (SUCCESS)
Chairman,
