‘Na Your Mama’: Delta Health Commissioner Cancels Nursing Student’s Query

The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of a disciplinary query issued to Osato Edobor, a nursing student at the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor.

Edobor had been queried after allegedly recording and posting a TikTok video during the official visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Asaba on March 25, 2025.

The visit was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, during which 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, were distributed to midwives across the South-South region.

A letter from the institution’s management had cited Edobor’s actions as a breach of the student handbook, describing the post as “malicious” and in violation of regulations against unauthorized recordings and online publications. The school directed Edobor to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, justifying why disciplinary measures should not be taken against her.

However, in a statement released on Friday, Dr. Onojaeme emphasized the importance of protecting students’ rights and fostering a conducive learning environment.

“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor,” the statement read.

“This decision stems from a commitment to ensuring that the rights of every student in health sciences and related health programmes are upheld.”

The controversy surrounding Edobor’s disciplinary action followed a viral video that emerged from the event, showing nursing students responding in protest when the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Senator Tinubu as “everyone’s mother.”

In the footage, when the MC stated, “Na our mama be this” (translated as “This is our mother”), the students replied in chorus, “Na your mama be this” (translated as “This is your mother”), signaling a rejection of the title.

The exact reason behind the students’ reaction remains unclear, but it comes amid widespread economic hardship and security concerns in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

During her visit, Oluremi Tinubu was praised by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who lauded her contributions to the health sector, stating that Nigeria was undergoing a transformation in healthcare.
