The President and Founder of Mayor Foundation for the Girl Child, Hon. Alhassan Mohammed Baba, says the foundation has distributed more than 10,000 sanitary pads to girls across Nigeria within the last two months.
Baba, who is also the Technical Adviser on Community Inclusion and Girl Child Development, disclosed this during an outreach programme in Abuja.
He said the initiative was aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene, supporting girls’ education, and addressing period poverty among vulnerable girls in schools and communities.
According to him, access to sanitary products remains a major challenge for many girls, leading to school absenteeism and other health related concerns.
“Over the past two months, the Mayor Foundation for the Girl Child has distributed more than 10,000 sanitary pads across different states of the federation to support girls and promote menstrual hygiene awareness,” he said.
Baba noted that the foundation was committed to empowering the girl child through education, advocacy, mentorship, and access to basic necessities.
He urged governments, corporate organisations, development partners, and well-meaning individuals to support efforts aimed at improving the welfare and development of girls.
The foundation’s president also emphasised the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and creating an environment where girls could manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence.
Some beneficiaries commended the foundation for the gesture, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
They said the support would help reduce the financial burden on their families and encourage more girls to remain in school during their menstrual periods.
The beneficiaries called for the expansion of the programme to reach more communities across the country.
