Lightning Strike Kills 14-year-old Student During Rainstorm In Niger State 

A 14-year-old student of Police Secondary School, Minna, identified as Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida, has tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning during a heavy rainstorm in Lapai, headquarters of Lapai Local Government Area in Niger State.

The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, June 8, 2026, reportedly happened while the teenager and some of his friends were playing football at the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School field in the community.

According to eyewitness accounts from residents, the sudden downpour was accompanied by strong winds, forcing the students to abandon their game and seek shelter.

A local resident, Mohammed Musa, explained that the boys initially attempted to wait out the rain but later moved under a tree when the weather conditions worsened.

“When the rain and windstorm started, they couldn’t make their way home immediately, so they took cover under a tree. Moments later, lightning struck, and the boy collapsed and died instantly,” he said.

The tragic incident has left residents of Lapai in shock, with many describing the sudden death as heartbreaking and devastating for the community.

Community members gathered at the scene shortly after the incident, expressing sorrow over the loss of the young student, whose life was cut short in such unexpected circumstances.

Local authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but residents say the incident has been reported to relevant security and emergency agencies.

The death has also renewed concerns about safety during thunderstorms, particularly the dangers of taking shelter under trees during heavy rainfall.

Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida has since been mourned by classmates, teachers, and community members, who described him as a lively and promising student whose future was abruptly ended by nature’s fury.
