The Department of State Services has arraigned former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations of unlawfully accessing a telephone conversation involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
El-Rufai, who also served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is being prosecuted on an amended five-count charge before a Federal High Court in Abuja before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
At the commencement of proceedings on Thursday, the prosecution informed the court that the charges had been increased from three to five counts.

El-Rufai had claimed on the live television interview that the phone lines of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu were tapped and his conversations were being monitored.
Charges brought under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, for allegedly endangering national security and failing to report the interception.
GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that El-Rufai alleged NSA Ribadu directed his arrest upon returning from Cairo.
The arraignment was delayed from February 25, 2026, due to El-Rufai being in ICPC custody.
His legal team has contested the charges as mere “casual remarks,” moving to quash them and seeking ₦2 billion in damages for abuse of court process.
