GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that Adamu Abubakar, the first son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State on March 2, 2026.
His resignation followed Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s official defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, February 27, 2026.
While the formal letter was addressed to the Governor via the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), reports indicate Adamu declined to defect to the APC due to loyalty to his father’s political alignment.
Governor Fintiri claimed that 22 out of 24 commissioners in his cabinet joined him in moving to the APC. Adamu Abubakar and Maksha Atiku (Commissioner for Livestock) were notable absentees who refused to sign the support list for the move.
Atiku Abubakar, now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), described the wave of defections as a result of “pressure and intimidation” rather than genuine party strength.
The Governor’s exit coincided with the resignation of the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, and 14 other lawmakers who also moved to the APC.
