A military transport plane carrying newly printed banknotes crashed near Bolivia’s capital on Friday evening, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens as the aircraft veered off the runway and ploughed into a busy avenue, authorities said.
The Bolivian Air Force’s Lockheed C-130 Hercules was attempting to land at El Alto International Airport near La Paz when it skidded off the runway and collided with vehicles on a nearby road, according to local officials.
Police and rescue teams confirmed at least 20 fatalities and more than 30 injuries in the disaster, which also damaged multiple cars and trucks along the highway where the plane came down.
The aircraft was transporting newly printed banknotes from the Central Bank of Bolivia meant for circulation, officials said.
After the crash, bills were scattered across the roadway, leading to chaotic scenes as bystanders sought to collect the currency before authorities intervened.
Video footage from the scene showed wreckage strewn across the highway and emergency responders working amid destroyed vehicles, while police used tear gas and other methods to control crowds attempting to approach the crash site.
Bolivian authorities have warned that the banknotes involved were not yet legal tender, as they had not been officially issued, and urged the public not to gather the scattered cash.
Flights at El Alto International Airport were temporarily suspended as rescue and investigation efforts continued.
Officials have launched inquiries into the cause of the crash, which occurred amid poor weather conditions in the region.
Emergency services are working to treat the injured and recover bodies, while authorities appeal for calm as the full scale of the tragedy unfolds.
