A Pennsylvania man is recovering in the hospital after he was accidentally shot in the back when his dog reportedly triggered a shotgun, according to the Shillington Police Department.
Police said they received a distress call at about 11:13 p.m. on Tuesday, reporting that a 53-year-old man had sustained a gunshot wound. While officers were en route, they were informed that the firearm may have been discharged when a dog “jumped onto the bed and set the gun off.”
Upon arrival, officers found the victim conscious on the floor. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had been cleaning his shotgun shortly before the incident.
He reportedly placed the firearm on his bed and sat down, after which one of his dogs jumped onto the bed, causing the shotgun to fire and strike him in the lower back.
At the time of the incident, only the victim, his son, and their two dogs were in the house. Police confirmed that the son was not in the room when the weapon discharged.
Emergency responders transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was taken into surgery immediately. Hospital officials later informed police that he had undergone one procedure and was expected to require another.
As of Thursday, the extent of his injuries remained unclear. Authorities described the shooting as accidental but noted that investigations are still ongoing.
