A New York court has sentenced a 44-year-old man, Felix Rojas, to five years’ imprisonment for sexually abusing the corpse of a deceased passenger on a Manhattan subway train.
Rojas received the sentence on Wednesday after pleading guilty to offences linked to the abuse of Jorge Gonzalez, 37, who died after losing consciousness on an R train in April 2025, according to Sky News Australia.
Investigators said surveillance footage captured Rojas approaching Gonzalez after realising he was unresponsive. Court records further showed that he searched through the victim’s pockets during the incident.
Authorities stated that the Brooklyn resident turned himself in to police about three weeks later after recognising himself in surveillance photographs released by investigators. He reportedly denied the allegations during questioning.
The court also ordered that Rojas remain under supervised release for 15 years after completing his prison sentence.
Reports indicated that immigration officials identified Rojas as a Mexican national who had made several previous attempts to enter the United States unlawfully.
Gonzalez had lived in the United States for almost 20 years and worked different jobs to support relatives in Mexico.
Speaking after the sentencing, family members described him as a devoted father and hardworking man who took on construction, restaurant and service jobs to provide for his loved ones.
The case attracted widespread attention across the United States due to the nature of the offence and concerns it raised about security and oversight within New York City’s public transit network.
