A 65-year-old man, Peter Adweli, has died following a dispute over N500 with his foster son in Oda Community, Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident reportedly began after Adweli demanded a balance of N500 from proceeds realised from the sale of cocoyam.
The request allegedly sparked an argument between him and his foster son, Kingsley Nsikak, which later escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to witnesses, the elderly man sustained serious injuries during the altercation. He was rushed to a medical facility but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
A relative of the deceased, James Ugolo, said the disagreement turned violent after both parties had reportedly been drinking. He noted that the victim fell during the fight and hit his head on an object, leading to fatal injuries.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect and said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Police spokespersons stated that the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Community leaders have since called for peaceful conflict resolution and greater use of traditional mechanisms for settling disputes, stressing the need for peace and dialogue to prevent avoidable tragedies.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of how unresolved anger and minor disagreements can lead to devastating consequences and the loss of human life.
