The Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Imam Yunus Olushina Teliat (Ayilara II), has denied allegations linking him to terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities, insisting that he has never supported such acts.
The cleric said his commitment remains centred on promoting peace and praying for the safety of residents and the stability of the country.
Teliat made the clarification in a statement issued on Sunday in response to allegations circulating on social media following the abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers by terrorists who attacked Ogbomoso.
He said, “I must state unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms: I, Imam Yunus Olushina Teliat (Ayilara II), PhD, am not a sympathiser of terrorism, banditry or criminal elements in any shape or form. I do not condone, excuse, or tolerate acts of criminality under any guise whatsoever.”
The Chief Imam said his years of religious leadership and academic service have been guided by the principles of justice, peace and respect for human life.
He explained that he has repeatedly used Friday sermons and public lectures to denounce terrorism, kidnapping and banditry, describing them as offences against both Islamic teachings and humanity.
“I have gone as far as publicly abandoning ambiguity and calling for capital punishment to be meted out by the state to anyone found culpable in these heinous acts, as a deterring measure to protect the innocent and preserve the fabric of our society.
“It is therefore deeply shocking and disheartening that certain unscrupulous elements are attempting to taint my hard-earned reputation,” he said.
Teliat warned bloggers, vloggers and social media users against associating his name or office with terrorism, banditry or any other criminal activity.
He also disclosed that his legal team has been instructed to take action against individuals accused of spreading what he described as defamatory and false claims about him.
“We will not hesitate to prosecute any further purveyors of falsehood to the fullest extent of the law.
“In conclusion, I offer my continuous prayers for Oyo State and for all victims of terrorism, banditry, and insecurity across the length and breadth of Nigeria.”
