IGP Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity, Improved Pensions For Retired Police Officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olatunji Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension benefits for retired police officers as part of efforts to address longstanding concerns over their welfare after service.

The proposal is currently before a Presidential committee comprising key financial and pension institutions, which is examining sustainable measures to reform the retirement benefits system for police personnel.

The proposed reforms include linking pension payments to officers’ last salaries, addressing outstanding pension liabilities and considering possible reviews of benefits for personnel who have already retired.

The initiative also seeks to address concerns surrounding the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), particularly complaints over the adequacy of retirement benefits and the timely payment of entitlements.

Retired police officers have repeatedly raised concerns about the sustainability of the existing pension arrangement, arguing that personnel who dedicate years to national security deserve a retirement system that guarantees financial stability and dignity after service.

Although the Federal Government has reportedly cleared pension payment backlogs and introduced increases for some beneficiaries, concerns remain over the long-term adequacy of retirement benefits.

The proposed 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension package could therefore represent a significant intervention in addressing the welfare challenges facing retired police personnel.

However, the proposal is yet to become an approved entitlement, as its implementation will depend on the recommendations of the Presidential committee, government approval, funding arrangements and the issuance of relevant guidelines.

If approved, the reforms could mark a major step towards improving the financial security of retired police officers and strengthening confidence in the welfare system for serving personnel.
