IGP Disu Deploys DIG, Two CPs To Rescue 20 Abducted Prospective NYSC Members

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, to Imo State to coordinate the ongoing search-and-rescue operation for 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members and other passengers abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.

The victims were reportedly abducted on October 1, 2026, along the Umunoha axis of the road.

The deployment was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, who said the IGP had directed the DIG Operations to provide operational direction for the rescue mission.

Nadada arrived in the state with two Commissioners of Police and carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the incident and the ongoing efforts by the Imo State Police Command to rescue the victims.

According to the statement, the DIG also reviewed the operational strategies, deployment of personnel and operational assets being used in the search for the abducted persons before issuing further directives to strengthen the coordinated response.

The assessment was conducted alongside the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso; the Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Akpan Anifiok; the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Mobile Force; other service commanders and members of the management team of the Imo State Police Command.

The police said the search-and-rescue operation had been intensified, with additional tactical teams and operational assets deployed to identified areas.

The force added that intelligence-led tracking of the suspects was being employed as part of efforts to locate the abductors and rescue the victims.

โ€œThe police are working in close coordination with sister security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted persons and the apprehension of the perpetrators,โ€ the statement said.

The DIG Operations assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force remained committed to rescuing the 20 abducted persons and would sustain the operation until the mission was successfully concluded.

Nadada also appealed to members of the public and the media to remain calm and vigilant while the security agencies continued the operation.

He urged anyone with credible information that could assist the rescue effort to immediately contact the police or the nearest security formation.

The police assured members of the public that information provided to the authorities would be treated with strict confidentiality.

The Force said further updates would be issued as the operation progresses.
