Group Thumbs Senator Enoh’s Reform In Sports Ministry, Slams Baseless N150m Car Purchase Allegation

A group of Nigerians under the aegis of the Civil Society Network for Good Governance has described an article published on 17th September 2024, titled “Tinubu’s Minister Buys New N150m Car Amid Worsening Economy,” as misleading and baseless.

At a press conference in Abuja on 19 September 2024, the convener of the group, Barr. Kamal Adefila, said while they would normally avoid dignifying such sensational headlines with a response, the sensitive nature of this moment in our nation’s history demands setting the record straight.

“First, it is important to clarify that the Ministry of Sports Development, under the leadership of Honourable Minister Senator John Owan Enoh, has been transparent in its operations and fully committed to the development of Nigerian sports. Contrary to the article’s claims of financial irresponsibility, the purchase of operational vehicles for key ministry officials was fully budgeted for in the ministry’s 2024 approved budget. Due process was followed at every step, with no involvement of the Honourable Minister in the bidding or procurement process”.

“This purchase was necessary for the smooth functioning of the ministry, which, upon its separation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in 2023, faced significant logistical challenges, including a lack of operational vehicles for key officers. Senator Enoh, for months, relied on an old, malfunctioning vehicle, while the Permanent Secretary used her personal car for official duties. The vehicles purchased are not luxury acquisitions, as the article falsely suggested, but essential tools for the ministry’s efficient functioning”, Adefila emphasized.

The group also noted the attempt to drag the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) into the narrative as completely baseless, stating that the football federation operates independently and has no overlap with the Ministry of Sports Development in this regard.

Finally, Barr. Adefila calls on Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms in the sports sector embarked upon by Senator Enoh, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, affirming that the sector will, in no distant moment, record a breakthrough.
