United States Senator Ted Cruz has doubled down accusing the Nigerian government officials of complicity in the mass killings of Christians, alleging that authorities at both state and federal levels have failed to act decisively against jihadist violence.
Cruz made the claims in a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, where he said Nigeria remains the deadliest country in the world for Christians.
According to him, more Christians are killed for their faith in Nigeria than anywhere else globally, alleging that since 2009, Islamic jihadist groups have murdered over 50,000 Christians, while more than 20,000 churches, schools and religious institutions have been destroyed.

He further claimed that several Christians were kidnapped during the recent Holy Week, describing the situation as a sustained campaign of violence.
The Texas senator alleged that Nigerian officials have, at a minimum, been in denial, and at worst, complicit in facilitating the attacks.
He pointed to the implementation of Sharia and blasphemy laws in several northern states as part of the problem.
“At the federal level, the government looks the other way at the jihadists, and the result is more violence,” Cruz said.
Cruz revealed that he had previously introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act, which seeks to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and impose sanctions on officials involved in enforcing blasphemy and Sharia laws.
He urged the US government to identify and sanction both local and federal officials allegedly linked to violations of religious freedom.
The lawmaker also alleged that Nigerian officials had pushed back against his position, claiming that some government representatives, including senior lawmakers, criticised him for accusing authorities of ignoring or enabling attacks on Christians.
Cruz said he had met with a delegation of Nigerian defence and security officials last year, who assured him of their commitment to ending the violence.
“I told them I will judge their commitment by results. Those results have yet to materialise,” he said.
He also referenced actions taken by US President Donald Trump, including placing Nigeria on the Country of Particular Concern list and ordering military action against ISIS-linked groups following attacks on Christians.
Cruz described the Nigerian government’s response to those actions as “hypocritical,” noting that authorities had publicly welcomed the intervention.
Quoting Trump, Cruz said jihadist groups were targeting Christians in Nigeria “at levels not seen for many years and even centuries.”
He questioned what had changed in the months since and called for stronger action by the United States to halt what he described as ongoing mass killings.
