Authorities in Ghana are seeking clarity over the detention of Ghanaian lawmaker, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, amid allegations linking him to an alleged US$32 million fraud and money laundering investigation connected to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament was reportedly arrested over the weekend at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam during a trip abroad, according to sources cited by GhanaWeb.
According to GhanaWeb, sources within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies reportedly confirmed to GhanaWeb that the first-time legislator is being investigated over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected “romance scams” involving an estimated amount of US$32 million.
A source familiar with the matter reportedly disclosed that investigations into the allegations had lasted for more than a year.
According to the BBC, Ghana’s parliament confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror, who said the leadership of the House had begun engagements with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands to obtain further details surrounding the arrest.
“Parliament has become aware that the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North constituency was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam,” the statement said.
Djietror added that “the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are in contact with the Ghana mission in The Hague for more details on the matter.”
He also assured that parliament would “provide the public with updates on the matter.”
The exact circumstances surrounding the detention remain unclear as of the time of filing this report. However, the arrest has renewed attention on previous allegations and controversies linked to the embattled lawmaker.
In a statement issued by an aide to the MP on October 27, 2025, the office responded to allegations that the lawmaker was involved in fraud.
The statement explained that “the office of the lawmaker has received reports that some people are using the MP’s name to defraud others through an alleged travel and visa programme.”
The aide, Kelly Mensah, added that “MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong has no connection with any travel or visa scheme and has not authorised anybody to carry out such activities.”
The statement further warned that information circulating on social media was fraudulent and urged members of the public to report such cases to the police.
Earlier, on September 8, 2025, lawyers representing the MP dismissed separate allegations that he had been arrested and was facing trial outside Ghana, claims that reportedly raised questions about the security of his parliamentary seat for Asante Akyem North.
In the letter signed by lawyer Elvis Adu-Ameyaw, the allegations were denied.
Frimpong is formerly a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party before breaking away from the party to contest the 2024 parliamentary election as an independent candidate in the Asante Akyem North constituency in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
He recorded a landslide victory, polling 26,926 votes to defeat the NPP candidate, Andy Appiah Kubi, who secured 8,933 votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kofi Asamoah, received 2,469 votes.
The victory was widely regarded as historic, marking one of the most decisive wins ever recorded by an independent candidate in Ghana’s parliamentary elections.
With authorities yet to officially disclose the reasons behind his detention in Amsterdam, attention is now focused on the outcome of ongoing diplomatic engagements between Ghanaian officials and Dutch authorities, as constituents and political observers await further updates on the fate of the lawmaker at the centre of the alleged US$32 million financial crimes probe.
