A 26-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to one month in prison after attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The convict, Ebenezer Frimpong, was jailed by the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty during proceedings on Tuesday, July 21.
The court’s decision came after a psychiatric evaluation at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital confirmed that he was mentally fit to stand trial.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi was driving an armoured police vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for routine servicing.
During the journey, the officer reportedly developed a stomach upset and parked near Nkawie Market to buy medication from a nearby pharmacy.
While the officer was away, Frimpong allegedly entered the vehicle and drove off towards the Nkawie–Abuakwa–Kumasi road.
The theft attempt triggered an immediate security response, with police officers and motor riders from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) launching a pursuit.
The suspect was eventually intercepted and arrested near Mim, close to Abuakwa, while the armoured vehicle was recovered intact and returned to police custody.
Frimpong initially pleaded not guilty when he first appeared before the court on May 5, 2026.
However, after the psychiatric report declared him fit to stand trial, he changed his plea to guilty.
Before sentencing, the presiding judge, His Honour Jephtha Appau, asked whether he understood the consequences of his actions. Frimpong responded that he did.
The judge subsequently sentenced him to one month in prison, explaining that the relatively short sentence reflected his status as a young first-time offender who admitted his guilt without prolonging the trial.
Police prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre had urged the court to apply the law accordingly after the accused changed his plea.
Authorities said the stolen armoured vehicle was recovered without damage following what they described as a swift and coordinated operation.
