FULL LIST: Nigeria Ranks Second Among Africa’s Longest Road Networks

Nigeria has the second-longest road network in Africa, with 195,000 kilometres of roadway coverage, according to 2026 data from Global Firepower.

South Africa leads the continent with 750,000km of roadway coverage, while Nigeria follows in second place globally at 28th.

Ethiopia ranks third in Africa with 180,000km, followed by Kenya with 161,452km.

The Democratic Republic of Congo occupies fifth position with 152,373km, while Tanzania ranks sixth with 145,203km.

Mali is seventh with 139,107km, followed by Algeria with 112,696km, Zimbabwe with 97,267km and South Sudan with 90,200km.

According to Global Firepower in its 2026 publication sighted by PUNCH Online on Monday, the figures measure total usable or useful roadway coverage and are part of its 2026 logistics ranking.

The organisation said roadways reflect a country’s infrastructure maturity and provide access to industrial sectors, terminals and ports.

Globally, the United States has the longest road network, with 6,586,610km, followed by India with 6,371,847km and China with 5.2 million kilometres.

Brazil ranks fourth globally with 2 million kilometres, while Russia is fifth with 1,283,387km.

South Africa is the only other African country in the global top 20, ranking 11th with 750,000km.

Nigeria’s 195,000km network places it 28th globally, ahead of Ethiopia at 30th and Kenya at 32nd.

The ranking measures the length of roadway coverage, not the quality, condition or proportion of paved roads in each country.
