A Fulani socio-cultural organisation, the Concerned Fulani People of Nigeria, has called on President Bola Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene over recent remarks by Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
The group, in a statement issued on Sunday by its convener, Ibrahim Barkindo Chubado, expressed concern over comments attributed to Igboho following the reported abduction of a woman and her children in Oyo State.
Igboho was reported to have issued an ultimatum to Fulani leaders in the state, demanding the release of the victims and threatening to take action against those he believed were responsible for the kidnapping.
Reacting to the development, the Fulani group said linking criminal activities to an entire ethnic group could heighten tensions and undermine efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security.
According to the organisation, criminality should be addressed on an individual basis rather than through ethnic profiling, stressing that law-abiding citizens should not be held responsible for the actions of a few offenders.
The group maintained that Fulani communities across the country have consistently condemned terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes.
It also expressed concern over what it described as a growing tendency to associate Fulani people with criminal acts without sufficient evidence, warning that such narratives could fuel division and hostility.
While acknowledging that every ethnic group has criminal elements, the organisation insisted that offenders should be treated as criminals regardless of their background. It therefore urged relevant authorities to engage Igboho and prevent statements capable of escalating ethnic tensions.
