FLASH: Terr0rists Block Maiduguri–Damaturu Highway, Protest Military Airstrike Damage At Jilli Market (Video)

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province have reportedly blocked a major section of the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, disrupting movement and raising fresh security concerns in Nigeria’s North-East.

The blockade is believed to be a reaction to recent military airstrikes that targeted Jilli market, an area the insurgents claim suffered significant destruction during the operation.

– Highway Shutdown Sparks Fear
Travellers and commercial drivers along the busy Maiduguri–Damaturu route were left stranded as the armed group allegedly mounted the roadblock, restricting vehicular movement for hours.

The highway is a critical link between Borno and Yobe states and is often used by civilians, traders, and security convoys.

Sources familiar with the situation said the insurgents used the blockade to express anger over what they described as heavy losses and damage inflicted on Jilli market following aerial bombardments by Nigerian forces.

– Airstrike Fallout
Although details surrounding the airstrikes remain unclear, local accounts suggest that the operation may have caused destruction to structures and goods within the market area.

It is not immediately confirmed whether the site was being used by insurgents or was purely a civilian trading hub at the time of the attack.

The Nigerian military has in recent months intensified aerial operations targeting insurgent hideouts and logistics bases across the North-East as part of ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.

– Rising Security Tensions
The latest incident highlights the volatile security situation in the region, where highways remain vulnerable to attacks, ambushes, and temporary takeovers by armed groups.

Security analysts warn that such retaliatory actions by insurgents could further endanger civilians and disrupt economic activities, particularly along strategic routes like the Maiduguri–Damaturu corridor.

– Uncertainty and Risk for Commuters
For residents and travelers, the blockade underscores the persistent risks associated with road travel in conflict-affected areas.

Many commuters now rely on military-escorted convoys for safety, while others avoid certain routes altogether due to frequent security threats.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the reported blockade or the extent of damage caused by the airstrikes in Jilli market.
