FLASH: IGP Orders Crackdown on Vehicles Without Number Plates Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police and tactical commanders across the country to immediately step up enforcement against vehicles operating without number plates or with deliberately concealed registration details.

Disu issued the directive on Tuesday during a strategic conference meeting with senior police officers, describing the growing incidence of unregistered or tampered plates as a “disturbing trend” with serious implications for public safety and national security.

He said the Nigeria Police Force would no longer tolerate what he described as increasing impunity among motorists who attempt to evade identification on public roads.

According to him, the practice of driving without proper registration, or concealing, defacing, or altering number plates, is unlawful and poses a significant challenge to effective policing and crime prevention.

“Across the country, we are witnessing an increasing number of vehicles being driven without registration numbers, as well as vehicles whose plates are deliberately concealed or altered to evade identification,” he said.

“This practice is unlawful, irresponsible, and unacceptable. The Nigeria Police Force will no longer tolerate such impunity.”

The IGP stressed that all vehicles operating on Nigerian roads must be properly registered and must visibly display approved number plates in line with existing laws.

He warned that any vehicle found in violation of the regulation would be stopped and subjected to appropriate legal procedures.

Disu further instructed all Commissioners of Police, formation heads, and tactical commanders to immediately intensify enforcement operations targeting unregistered vehicles and those with concealed or tampered plates.

The directive, according to the police chief, is part of broader efforts to strengthen internal security, improve crime detection, and ensure better accountability on the nation’s roads.

Security analysts have long warned that vehicles without identifiable registration details are frequently used to facilitate criminal activities, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, making enforcement a key component of national security strategy.
