A group known as Rescue Alaigbo has written to the Department of State Services (DSS), seeking permission to stage a peaceful protest at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, October 16, 2025, against calls for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
In a letter addressed to the Director of the DSS, FCT Command, and signed by Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as ‘Ijele Speaks’, co-convener of the group, Rescue Alaigbo described itself as a coalition of Nigerians committed to promoting national unity and justice for victims of insecurity in the South East.
The group said it was “utterly disgusted” by what it called attempts by “desperate politicians” to subvert the judicial process by demanding the discontinuation of terrorism charges against Kanu and members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
“We have watched with utter disgust the mindless manner in which some political actors most probably funded and backed by desperate politicians who seek nothing else but chaos as a means of attaining are trying to append the judicial process by demanding the abrupt discontinuation of an existential terrorism case of Nnamdi Kanu and his IPOB ESN bandits who have taken countless lives of both civilians and military personnel in the South East,” the letter stated.
Rescue Alaigbo said the planned protest would also serve as an expression of its disapproval of lawmakers “shamelessly demanding” Kanu’s unconditional release while neglecting “the victims and communities destroyed to the point of hopelessness by the activities of IPOB and ESN criminals.”
The group said between 20 and 50 persons are expected to participate in the peaceful demonstration and urged the DSS to grant permission for the “noble patriotic duty.”
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, recently launched a campaign demanding the release of Kanu, rallying politicians and citizens alike, and expanding the movement to grassroots locations like markets.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate, announced a protest march scheduled for October 20, 2025, aimed at pressuring the Nigerian government to release Kanu. He described the protest as a “historic” march to Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, starting at 7 a.m., and has been actively promoting it under the hashtag **#FreeNnamdiKanuNow**.
