Born in Islington on August 13, 1934, Friar’s love story with Arsenal started as a miracle. In 1945, at just 11 years old, while playing football with a tennis ball on Avenell Road outside Highbury, the ball rolled under the car of then Arsenal manager George Allison. That chance encounter earned him a job as a matchday messenger for half-a-crown a week. 1484

He joined full-time in 1950, rose to become Club Secretary in 1973 and Managing Director in 1983.

He was the brain behind Arsenal’s historic move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium in 2006, alongside Danny Fiszman. ea74

In honour of his service, the bridge connecting Emirates Stadium to Arsenal Tube Station was named *The Ken Friar Bridge* in 2011, with a statue of him as a young boy playing football erected at the entrance.

Friar retired from the board in September 2020 and was named Life President. He was awarded an OBE in 2000 for services to football.
