FLASH: 10 Killed, Others Injured As Gunmen Attack Ebonyi Community

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed that 10 people were killed in an attack on Amegu Nkalaha Community in Ishielu Local Government Area by unidentified gunmen.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu told Vanguard that security operatives recovered 10 bodies after the attack, adding that the assailants also burned houses selectively in the community.

“Several houses were also burnt selectively in the area, and other properties destroyed. Upon receipt of the information, we drafted police operatives to the area.

“We are currently investigating the incident while normalcy has returned to the area,” the PPRO stated.

“We also recovered 10 corpses from the area. At the moment, our personnel are there, and normalcy is returning to the area.” Ukandu added.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, armed with cutlasses and guns, struck in the early hours of Sunday, killing several residents and destroying properties.

Mrs. Ifeoma Agwu, Chairperson of Ishielu LGA, said authorities were still evacuating bodies and assessing the full extent of the casualties.

Former EBSU ASUU Chairman, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, a resident of the community, described the attack as tragic.

“My village, Amegu Nkalaha, was attacked today by herdsmen. Many have been killed, and houses have been razed. What a black Sunday!” he lamented.

Prof. Idenyi added that while the number of casualties may rise, security agencies and local authorities are continuing recovery efforts, particularly in farmlands.
