Finland Begins Terrorism Trial Against Simon Ekpa

The trial of the self-acclaimed Biafra agitator, Nigerian-Finnish, Simon Ekpa, commenced in Finland on Friday.

Ekpa, who heads a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was charged with terrorism offences by the Finnish authorities on May 16, 2025.

The deputy prosecutor general in Finland charged Ekpa with public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and participation in a terrorist group.

Ekpa, who was arrested in November 2024 following Nigeriaโ€™s government request, appeared before the Pรคijรคt-Hรคme District Court in Finland on Friday as the countryโ€™s government commenced his terrorism trial.

He was accused of using social media to incite violence and causing unrest in the South-east region, as part of his secessionist agitation for Biafra.

The prosecutors who are demanding a six-year prison sentence for Ekpa said his activities may constitute terrorism under Finnish law.

โ€œWe have a great deal of evidence regarding this individualโ€™s online activity and communications,โ€ said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala.

During interrogations, Ekpa denied ordering weapons for pro-Biafra groups and other allegations against him.
