“After 50 years apart, we are married today”; “After 50 years apart, here we are today—we are married”. These were some of the joyful words of Abubakar Sadiq Ladan, the groom, and his bride, Hajiya Fatsuma Umar Kulani, at their wedding recently in Bauchi.
Abubakar Sadiq Ladan, aged 70, and Hajiya Fatsuma Umar Kulani, aged 60, who is a former Manager of Programmes at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Bauchi, have finally married after being separated for 50 years.
This is not an ordinary marriage. In fact, it is a particularly unusual and remarkable one, considering their ages and the fact that they reunited after 50 years, having first met and fallen in love when they were young. By the grace of God, their reunion has now culminated in a marriage with a remarkable history.
The marriage ceremony took place at the Juma’at Mosque in Kwallaga, Bauchi city, Bauchi State, on September 19th, 2026.
After the wedding ceremony, Journalists around, interviewed the groom, Abubakar Sadiq Ladan, who was visibly happy and excited on what was a historic day for both of them.
His excitement was so overwhelming that, at some points during the interview, he struggled to find the words to express himself.

She said she had never imagined that such a day would come in her life. At one point, after her previous marriage ended, she had even believed that she would never marry again, especially because she had grown older.
The Groom’s Story
Abubakar Sadiq Ladan explained how he first met Fatsuma:
“I was travelling with a friend when we saw two young ladies.
My friend said to me, ‘Look, there are some girls over there!’ I told him, ’Then go and talk to them. But my friend said, ’No, you should be the one to go and talk to them. “So we went over to them. I started by asking Fatsuma for her name, but she remained silent and did not answer me. Her younger sister then said her name was ’Yar Yaya, which was a family name. I said, ‘Yar Yaya is not her real name. What is her actual name?’ She then told me that her name was Fatima.
“Fatima herself did not say anything. You know how shy young girls could be at that time. “Her younger sister continued answering my questions, while Fatima remained quiet.”
I then asked where they lived, and they gave me directions I told them that I would visit them.
“I later went there and sent a young boy into the house to ask for her. He came back and said they wanted to know who was asking for her. I told him to say that it was Abubakar.
“From there, we started dating.
“One day, however, they changed their location from the place I knew. When I went there, I was told that they had moved. At that time, mobile phones were not available as they are today, so I could not simply call her and ask her to describe where they had moved to.
“I then remembered that I knew where her father worked.
“So I went to his workplace and, through that, I was able to find out where they had moved to. From there, we continued our relationship.
“But just two days later, by the will of God, we suddenly separated. We never saw each other again after that.
“She later got married, and I also got married. There was a three-year difference between the times we got married.
“After that, we never met again, except that I would sometimes see her on NTA Bauchi.
“And now, it has been 50 years since we separated, and here l am telling you this story.”

The Bride’s Story
Hajiya Fatsuma Umar Kulani also shared her side of the story: “When I met Abubakar, I was in Form Two at secondary school. We were together and were in love, but by God’s will, we were separated.
“Eventually, both of us got married.
“My marriage has now ended, and then, unexpectedly, God brought us together again after 50 years of separation.
“When he returned from abroad and told me that he wanted us to get married, I initially said no. I told him that we were now much older and that we should simply maintain a family relationship and friendship.
“But he did not give up. He continued trying to convince me. He also involved some elders, who encouraged me to agree to the marriage.
“Eventually, I accepted. “And by the grace of God, today is the day our marriage has been solemnised.
“All we can say is that we pray God blesses the marriage.”
