A new chapter may be opening for Nigeria’s tertiary education system as the Federal Government unveils the Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Prize, a landmark initiative designed to reward exceptional research, innovation and intellectual excellence among students and researchers nationwide.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative during a press briefing held alongside members of the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) National Laureate team, describing the programme as an important step towards building an education system that produces solutions rather than certificates alone.
At the heart of the initiative is an initial annual prize fund of ₦365 million, offering substantial financial rewards to outstanding academic minds across Nigeria.
The Undergraduate Star Prize will attract ₦35 million, while the Master’s Star Prize carries ₦50 million. The biggest individual award, the Doctoral Star Prize, is worth ₦100 million.
Beyond the three major prizes, ₦180 million will be distributed through 15 Thematic Excellence Prizes, with each category offering ₦12 million to its winner.
The competition is open to students and researchers from all accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria, creating a truly national platform for identifying promising ideas and exceptional talent regardless of institution or location.
The thematic categories will target areas with direct relevance to national development, including Engineering and Technology, Medicine and Health Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, Agriculture, Law and Teaching Innovation.
The programme will also feature the Dr. Stella Adadevoh Prize for Medicine and Medical Innovation, established to honour the late medical doctor whose courage and dedication to saving lives remain an enduring part of Nigeria’s history.
According to Alausa, the Federal Ministry of Education and NERD will jointly implement the prize through a transparent, competitive and merit-based process. Academic excellence, originality, research quality and real-world impact will be central to the assessment.
The minister linked the initiative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the administration’s drive to strengthen human capital and ensure that Nigeria’s enormous pool of youthful talent becomes an engine for innovation and economic development.
He said the country must deliberately move towards an education system where knowledge and skills are converted into solutions, innovations, enterprises and measurable national value.
The initiative is also expected to inject fresh seriousness into academic research, particularly final-year projects, master’s dissertations and doctoral studies. Instead of research being viewed merely as a graduation requirement, students now have an incentive to pursue ambitious ideas capable of attracting national recognition and substantial financial rewards.
Beyond the prize money, the programme could provide the Federal Government with a pipeline for discovering exceptional young Nigerians whose research and innovations could eventually be developed, commercialised or deployed across government institutions and the private sector.
For Alausa, the objective is bigger than an annual award ceremony. It is about deliberately changing what Nigeria rewards in its education system.
The National Laureate Prize therefore represents an attempt to make brilliance visible, innovation valuable and research consequential, while giving Nigeria’s brightest students and researchers a national stage on which their ideas can compete and make an impact.
“This is an intentional redirection and reprogramming of our educational system,” Alausa said, describing the initiative as a major opportunity to build a generation of Nigerians whose education translates into practical solutions and national progress.
