The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg has demanded thorough investigations into the deaths of three Nigerian nationals killed in separate incidents across South Africa between September 18 and 21, 2026.
The Consulate-General made the demand in a press statement issued on Monday, September 28, saying the three deaths occurred in Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni within four days.
It said the latest cases have raised fresh concerns over the safety of Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa and called on relevant authorities to identify and prosecute anyone found responsible.
The first incident occurred on September 18 at Kenlin Court on Douglas Street in the Central Business District of Bloemfontein, where Nigerian national Kennechukwu Christopher Igwemmandu allegedly jumped to his death while attempting to escape what the Consulate described as police harassment and brutality.
Two days later, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde, a Nigerian security guard, was shot at Spanata Bar and Grills Night Club in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, after an altercation with a South African customer.
The Consulate said the dispute began when Olatunde attempted to stop the customer from leaving the club with a cup belonging to the establishment.

👉 JOIN WHATSAPP CHANNELAccording to the Consulate, the unidentified man pulled out a firearm and shot Olatunde in the lower part of his body before fleeing the scene.
The mission said the victim was taken to Mamelodi Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries on the morning of September 21.
The Consulate further alleged that the gunman returned to the club after realising that people there knew his identity and threatened witnesses against reporting the incident or identifying him to the police.
The third death involved Christian Hillary Nnaemeka, who died on September 21 following an encounter with South African politician and investigative content creator Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizok’thola team in Primrose, Ekurhuleni.
The Consulate alleged that Nnaemeka was assaulted and tortured during the operation before attempting to escape by jumping over a fence.
It said he later collapsed from injuries and exhaustion and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The mission also recalled the February 9 death of another Nigerian, Emeka Clement Guz, who it said was shot during an encounter with Khumalo’s reality television crew in Windsor East, Randburg.
The Consulate said no arrests had been made in that case, while Khumalo is currently seeking election as mayor of Ekurhuleni.
The latest deaths bring the number of Nigerians reportedly killed in South Africa this year to 12, according to the Consulate. It also said 112 Nigerians had been killed in the country since 2022, including 32 allegedly killed by members of South African security forces, with no conviction recorded in any of the cases.
The Consulate said the deaths have raised questions about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and what it described as a possible pattern of Nigerians being targeted. It urged South African authorities to investigate the cases thoroughly and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought before the law.
“Nigerian and all lives matter,” the Consulate said, stressing that allegations of wrongdoing must be handled through due process and that suspects should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The mission urged South African authorities to protect Nigerians and other foreign nationals while pursuing investigations into the latest deaths.
It also called for justice for the victims and continued engagement between the relevant authorities over the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
