The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), has launched a fresh attack on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of taking actions that allegedly deepened division and insecurity in the state during his administration.
Musa made the allegations on Thursday while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed developments surrounding security and political issues in the country.
The Defence Minister accused the former governor of allegedly dividing Kaduna State along religious lines, describing the situation in the state during El-Rufai’s administration as “toxic.”
According to Musa, residents of Southern Kaduna have legitimate reasons to be unhappy with the former governor over what he described as his alleged actions against the people of the region.
He further alleged that El-Rufai deliberately made plans that could result in the killing of people in Southern Kaduna.
Musa said the alleged conduct of the former governor made it difficult for affected communities to have favourable feelings towards him.
“We know how it was when Elrufai was there, it was toxic. Elrufai did a lot of terrible things in Kaduna State; he divided the state in two,” Musa said.
The minister also accused El-Rufai of using the machinery of government to intimidate individuals with whom he had disagreements.
According to him, whenever the former governor had an unresolved disagreement with an individual, bulldozers could allegedly be deployed to demolish the person’s property.
Musa said such actions contributed to the tension and divisions that characterised the state during the former governor’s tenure.
He, however, praised the incumbent Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for what he described as efforts to correct some of the problems inherited from the previous administration.
“Governor Uba Sani has been able to dissolve all that,” Musa said.
The Defence Minister maintained that people who suffered during the period in question could not simply forget what they experienced.
“We can never be happy with somebody (El-Rufai) who has deliberately plans for the killing of our people,” he added.
Musa’s comments represent a strong criticism of El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 and remains an influential figure in Nigerian politics.
The allegations are also likely to generate further political reactions, particularly given El-Rufai’s continued involvement in national political discussions and his criticism of the current administration.
Musa did not provide specific details during the interview to substantiate his allegation that El-Rufai deliberately planned the killing of Southern Kaduna residents.
The former governor has previously faced criticism from political opponents and groups over his administration’s policies and handling of security and communal tensions in Kaduna State.
The latest comments by the Defence Minister could therefore reignite debates over El-Rufai’s record in office, the security challenges that confronted Kaduna during his tenure and the political divisions that continue to shape the state.
