A man, Shafarudeen, has instituted a divorce suit against his wife, Kafayat, at the Grade A Customary Court, Court 2, sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, alleging that she is troublesome, disrespectful, quarrelsome and constantly humiliates him.
Shafarudeen told the court that Kafayat had made his life miserable because of her troublesome behaviour. He alleged that she was always on his neck and never allowed him to have peace of mind.
According to him, his wife was troublesome and constantly looked for opportunities to fight him. He also alleged that she had no respect for him as the head of the home and frequently hurled insults at him.
He further claimed that Kafayat had slapped him on several occasions during disagreements, thereby making him an object of ridicule in their compound.
Shafarudeen said her alleged misbehaviour was not limited to their home, adding that she also humiliated him in public, particularly when she visited his shop to fight him. He said her actions had made him a laughing stock among his co-traders and customers.
He told the court that he was no longer willing to continue the marriage and therefore prayed for the dissolution of their relationship. He also sought custody of their children, promising to take good care of them.
In addition, Shafarudeen asked the court to restrain his wife from threatening him and infringing on his privacy.
Kafayat denied all the allegations against her but agreed to the dissolution of the marriage.
Giving his testimony, Shafarudeen said, “I met my wife in 2013 and she moved in with me.
“We did not carry out any of the marital rites. I also did not pay her bride price.
“My lord, my wife has no regard for me. She treats me with scorn in the home and has turned me into a source of ridicule both in our compound and in public places.
“Kafayat has refused to allow me to have peace of mind. She is troublesome and quarrelsome and turns every discussion into an argument, which often ends with her fighting me.
“She has a caustic tongue and always hurls insults at me.
“Kafayat does not stop at this. She slaps me during arguments, thereby humiliating me.
“There were times when she locked me inside our apartment and prevented me from going to work.
“My lord, on a few occasions when I escaped from home, she would trail me and fight me in public.
“She sometimes extended her misbehaviour to my place of business. She would raise her voice against me, fight me and disgrace me.
“I have invariably become a laughing stock among my business partners and customers.
“My lord, I have borne this shame enough. I am in court today to end the relationship between my wife and me. It has turned sour, and I can no longer swallow it.
“I pray for divorce.
“I further beg for custody of our children. I will do my best to take care of them.
“I lastly request an order restraining her from threatening me and infringing on my privacy.”
The President of the court, Mrs O.E. Owoseni, adjourned the case for defence.
