Five residents of Malam Matari community on the outskirts of Damaturu, Yobe State, have been hospitalised after sustaining bites from a dog confirmed to be infected with rabies, triggering an emergency response by veterinary authorities.
The incident also affected some livestock, prompting the Yobe State Pilot Livestock Development Programme to activate its Rapid Response Team to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease.
The Programme Manager, Dr. Bulama Maina Yaro, who supervised the emergency intervention, disclosed that all five victims had commenced the recommended five-dose post-exposure prophylaxis vaccination and were responding positively to treatment.
He said the swift intervention helped prevent the outbreak from worsening, adding that the situation had been brought under control.
According to Yaro, the infected dog attacked two goats, which were later disposed of and buried in line with veterinary public health procedures to eliminate the risk of further transmission.
“The situation is under control. The affected persons are receiving appropriate medical care, while the infected animals have been safely buried to prevent further spread of the virus,” he said.
As part of measures to curb the spread of rabies, veterinary officials also carried out a public sensitisation campaign in the community, educating residents on the dangers of the disease, warning signs in animals, the need for immediate medical attention after dog bites, and preventive measures.
The awareness exercise was led by Veterinary Officer, Dr. Yau Buba Wakil, who urged residents to promptly report suspected rabid animals and avoid contact with infected pets or livestock.
