A medical practitioner, Dr Ere Ogbachi, has died after developing complications shortly after giving birth to triplets in Bayelsa State.
Her family disclosed this in a statement signed by her brother Meshack Sintei and posted on Facebook Wednesday, noting that she was moved to the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where she died at about 2:45 am on Tuesday.
Dr Ogbachi was a registrar at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, and a graduate of Niger Delta University.
The family explained that she encountered medical complications not long after a successful delivery, which necessitated an urgent transfer to intensive care.
āShe successfully gave birth to triplets at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiriā¦ complications arose that eventually forced us to rush her to the Intensive Care Unit in FMC Yenagoa,ā the statement said.
Recounting her final moments, the family said doctors and medical staff worked tirelessly to stabilise her condition, but her health declined rapidly.
āWe watched her struggling to live, we watched her gasping for breath, we watched how the team of doctors and other experts in FMC kept trying their best to revive her,ā it stated.
According to the statement, her oxygen levels dropped significantly during the emergency intervention. āThe SpO2 machine in the ICU began reading downwards from 70 to 50 and then to 0,ā it said.
Sintei described the loss as heartbreaking, noting that the family is deeply affected by her death and remembering her as a committed doctor and new mother.
āIt was a painful experienceā¦ my beloved sister died at exactly 2:45 am on April 14th 2026. A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,ā he said.
The statement added that she āwas a fighter to the end,ā while also thanking those who have shown support during the difficult time.
At the time of this report, hospital authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
