The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Dumebi Kachikwu, has accused a faction led by former Senate President David Mark of deliberately undermining the party, alleging that it was set up to fail from the outset.
Kachikwu made the allegation on ARISE NEWS while speaking on the internal crisis rocking the ADC, claiming the faction inherited a party already burdened with multiple court cases and further deepened its problems through controversial decisions.
According to him, the group introduced ad hoc committees that took over the responsibilities of state executive committees, a move he said displaced elected party structures and imposed preferred individuals across states.
“I think these guys had a clear agenda to fail because they came into a party that had multiple court cases in Nigeria,” he said.
“David Mark and Co set up AdHoc committees and had these committees take over the functions of the state EXCOs to bring in people that they want in,” he added.
He further alleged that party members across several states had reached out to him with complaints of being removed from their positions without due process.
“I have heard people call me from all the states complaining that they have been pushed out,” he added.
Kachikwu also referenced proceedings during the party’s convention, claiming that the matter was already in court at the time and that the judge questioned the legitimacy of the exercise.
He said the court had asked the party’s lawyer whether a convention was being conducted, to which the lawyer allegedly responded in the negative—an exchange he said contributed to the judge’s description of the event as a “kangaroo convention.”
“In fact, on the day of the convention, they were in court and the judge asked their lawyer this question: Is it true that you are conducting a convention? And the lawyer said absolutely not, which was why the judge called the convention a kangaroo convention.”
