GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that the civil servants in Akwa Ibom State are in happy hour as Governor Umo Eno implemented the new minimum wage of N80,000, paying the increment arrears in bulk.
The Governor had promised to implement the new minimum wage, which is N10,000 higher than the national minimum wage, after receiving the report from the workers’ verification committee last month.
To the surprise of many, the payment of the new minimum wage came with the arrears of the increment from November to December, which had earlier been paid with the old salary scale.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information in the State, Akparawa James Edet described the scene in his ministry as “electric” when over 20 staff rushed into his office, overwhelmed with excitement, upon seeing the amount deposited into their accounts.
According to Edet, “They thought the government would stagger the arrears into subsequent months’ salaries, but Governor Eno has surprised them by paying everything in bulk. We’re all very appreciative of this kind gesture.”
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, said Governor Eno’s action demonstrates his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers.
Udoh recalled that 32 workers in the state received a million naira each as a gift from the Governor last week, while one worker received a car gift, all as incentives to encourage them to work harder.
The Governor’s spokesman said these actions would motivate the state’s workforce to be more productive and committed, aligning with the ARISE Agenda of the Governor.
