Children Playing With Gas Cylinder Set Building Ablaze In Kwara

A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of a residential building in Omu-Aran, located in Irepodun Local Government Area, after children were allegedly playing with a cooking gas cylinder while their parents were away.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, May 11, 2026, at about 12:57 p.m. at Olayinka House along Ibrahim Taiwo Road.

Confirming the development in a statement, Hassan Adekunle said the fire affected a storey building containing four three-bedroom apartments.

According to him, two of the flats were damaged before firefighters successfully brought the situation under control.

“The incident involved a storey building consisting of four flats of three-bedroom apartments each. The fire affected two of the flats before it was successfully brought under control by firefighters at about 13:21hrs,” the statement read.

Adekunle explained that preliminary findings showed the fire started after children allegedly tampered with a cooking gas cylinder in the absence of their parents.

He added that the children reportedly cried out for help after the fire spread beyond their control, drawing the attention of a passerby who alerted emergency responders.

“It was further gathered that when the fire became uncontrollable, the children ran downstairs crying for help before a passerby noticed the situation and alerted the Fire Service,” he stated.

The spokesperson noted that firefighters responded swiftly to the distress call, preventing the remaining sections of the building from being completely destroyed.

Fortunately, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident.

Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Mohammed, urged parents and guardians to keep children away from gas cylinders, matches, and other flammable materials.

He also advised residents not to leave minors unattended around cooking appliances and encouraged the public to quickly contact emergency agencies whenever fire incidents occur to reduce damage and prevent loss of lives.
