Canada has highlighted seven categories of skilled workers it is seeking to attract through its Express Entry immigration system as the country looks to strengthen its workforce and respond to labour shortages in key sectors.
The categories target experienced professionals whose skills are considered valuable to the Canadian economy.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Express Entry categories include:
1. Healthcare and social services professionals
Canada is seeking experienced workers in healthcare and social services as part of efforts to meet workforce demands in these sectors.
2. Tradespersons
Skilled trades workers are among the professionals targeted through category-based Express Entry draws.
The category is aimed at workers with experience in eligible trade occupations.
3. Educators
Education professionals are also included among the categories Canada is seeking through Express Entry.
4. STEM professionals
Professionals working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations are another priority category.
The government is seeking experienced workers whose expertise can contribute to Canadaโs technology and innovation sectors.
5. Transport professionals
Workers in eligible transport occupations are also being targeted under the category-based selection system.
6. French-language speakers
Canada is also seeking skilled workers with French-language proficiency.
The category forms part of the governmentโs efforts to strengthen French-speaking communities outside Quebec.
7. Medical doctors, researchers and senior managers
Canada has also identified medical doctors, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience as a category for Express Entry invitations.
Applicants in this group must have qualifying Canadian work experience.
How category-based Express Entry draws work
Express Entry is Canadaโs system for managing applications for permanent residence under three federal economic immigration programmes.
Rather than inviting candidates solely based on their overall Comprehensive Ranking System score, category-based draws allow Canada to select candidates who meet specific economic or labour-market priorities.
Candidates must first qualify for the Express Entry pool and meet the requirements of an eligible immigration programme. Those selected in a category-based draw receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
Being listed in a priority category does not guarantee an invitation. Candidates must still meet the requirements of the relevant category and achieve the score or other criteria set for a particular draw.
Canadaโs approach is designed to help address labour shortages while attracting workers with skills needed across different parts of the economy.
Prospective applicants should check the latest eligibility requirements and category criteria before creating an Express Entry profile, as Canadaโs immigration priorities and selection criteria can change.
