The Senate Public Accounts Committee has directed security agencies to ensure the appearance of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, before lawmakers over unresolved audit queries involving a staggering N210 trillion.
The directive was issued during a tense committee session in Abuja on Wednesday after senators expressed frustration over what they described as Kyariβs repeated failure to honour invitations and summons issued by the committee.
Lawmakers insisted that the former NNPCL chief must personally provide explanations regarding discrepancies and financial issues identified in audit reports covering the period from 2017 to 2023.
According to the committee, the concerns relate primarily to questions surrounding accrued expenses and sundry receivables recorded in the financial statements of the national oil company. Senators argued that explanations previously provided by NNPCL officials were insufficient to address the concerns raised by auditors.
Members of the committee voiced alarm over the magnitude of the figures involved, stressing that the unresolved issues raised serious questions about transparency, accountability, and the management of Nigeria’s oil revenues during the years under review.
The lawmakers unanimously agreed to invoke their constitutional oversight powers to compel compliance, directing relevant security agencies to produce Kyari before the committee to answer the audit queries.
The latest development follows earlier invitations and summons issued in March 2026, when Kyari and several former NNPCL officials were requested to appear before the committee regarding the audit findings.
However, senators noted that the responses received so far had failed to adequately address the issues under investigation.
Committee members maintained that public accountability requires former and current public officials entrusted with managing national resources to explain any financial discrepancies identified in official audit reports.
The decision has heightened public interest in the ongoing legislative probe, given the enormous sum involved and the strategic role of the oil sector in Nigeria’s economy.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Kyari nor his representatives had publicly responded to the Senate committee’s directive.
